Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained to average soil in full sun, spacing 12–18 inches apart. Violet Pinwheels is a creeping phlox with distinctive, pinwheel-shaped, violet-blue flowers that carpet the ground in spring. It forms a dense, spreading mat of evergreen foliage that provides year-round groundcover. Excellent drainage is important. No special soil preparation needed beyond breaking up compacted soil.

Care Tips

Shear plants back lightly by about one-third after the spring bloom to encourage compact, dense growth and prevent the center from opening up. The evergreen mat provides good winter groundcover. Divide or trim edges to control spread. No fertilizing needed in average soils. Creeping phlox is an excellent, low-maintenance groundcover for sunny slopes, rock gardens, and the front of borders. Outstanding spring color with year-round foliage interest.
