Variegated Solomon's Seal

Plant in spring or fall in moist, humus-rich soil in a shaded or partially shaded location. Variegated Solomon's Seal has exceptional, arching stems with broadly white-edged leaves that create a graceful, architectural effect in the shade garden. Work compost or leaf mold into the planting area, space plants 18–24 inches apart, and water well. Mulch to retain moisture.

Keep soil consistently moist. Remove old stems in fall or early spring. Solomon's seal spreads gradually by underground rhizomes to form a colony over time — divide every few years to control spread or propagate. No fertilizing is needed in organically rich soil. The white-edged foliage is luminous in shaded settings and the small, white, pendant flowers in spring add additional charm. One of the most elegant of all shade perennials.
