Prairie Princess Ironweed

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 18–24 inches apart in moist, well-drained soil. Ironweed is a native prairie plant that adapts well to average garden soils. Water regularly through the first growing season. A light mulch helps retain moisture. Ironweed can grow quite tall — site it toward the back of borders or in naturalized areas where its height is an asset.

Cut plants back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide clumps every three to four years in spring to prevent overcrowding. Ironweed is one of the most important late-season nectar plants for monarch butterflies and many other pollinators — the vivid purple flowers in late summer are a critical fuel stop for migrating monarchs. No fertilizing is needed in average garden soils.
