Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 3–4 feet apart. This native prairie grass is extremely adaptable and thrives in a wide range of soils including poor, dry, and clay conditions. No soil amendment is needed. Water regularly through the first growing season to establish the deep root system, then reduce as the plant becomes highly drought tolerant. A light mulch helps during the first season.

Care Tips

Cut plants back hard to 4–6 inches above the ground in late winter or very early spring, before new growth begins. This is the single most important maintenance task — it prevents the new growth from struggling through old stems. October Sky provides attractive blue-gray summer foliage that transitions to warm copper and gold tones in fall and winter, providing outstanding multi-season interest. No fertilizing is needed.
