Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained soil, spacing 12–18 inches apart. Butterfly Blue is one of the most prolific and long-blooming perennials available, producing lavender-blue, pincushion-like flowers from late spring through fall — one of the longest bloom seasons of any perennial. It adapts to average conditions without special soil preparation. Water moderately.

Care Tips

Deadhead spent blooms consistently to keep new flowers forming throughout the very long blooming season. Cut plants back by about one-third in midsummer if they look tired to encourage fresh growth. Divide every two to three years in spring to maintain vigor. No heavy fertilizing is needed. The lavender-blue flowers are outstanding for cutting and provide extraordinary long-season nectar for butterflies and bees. A must-have perennial.
