Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained to dry, average to lean soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Standing Ovation is an upright, compact little bluestem variety that stays more erect than standard little bluestem — ideal for gardens where flopping is undesirable. It adapts to poor, dry, and sandy soils without special preparation. No soil amendment needed. Water regularly through the first season.

Care Tips

Cut plants back to 4–6 inches in late winter before new growth begins. Standing Ovation's upright habit means it remains tidy without staking. The blue summer foliage, copper fall color, and persistent seed heads through winter provide three seasons of interest. No fertilizing is needed in lean soils. An excellent, improved little bluestem for gardens where a more compact, upright native grass is desired.
