Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 18–24 inches apart in average, well-drained soil. This native aster establishes easily and adapts to a range of garden conditions. Water regularly through the first growing season. A light mulch helps retain moisture. Choose a site with good air circulation to minimize powdery mildew, which can occasionally be an issue in humid climates.

Care Tips

Pinch back stem tips by about one-third in early to mid-June for a fuller, more compact plant with more flowers come fall. Without pinching, plants can become tall and floppy. Divide every two to three years in early spring to maintain vigor. This is a valuable late-season nectar source for migrating butterflies and bees. No heavy fertilizing is needed — lean conditions actually produce better flowering.
