Foliage releases a pleasant anise scent when crushed, distinguishing it from other native goldenrods. Plumes of bright yellow flowers appear in autumn, attracting pollinators without spreading aggressively.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Lean, dry conditions produce the best, most compact growth- avoid rich or wet soils.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Pinch stem tips back in late spring to encourage a more compact, branching plant and reduce staking needs. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. No fertilization needed. The anise-scented foliage is distinctive and fragrant when crushed. The golden flower plumes in late summer are excellent for pollinators and cutting. Largely pest-free and deer resistant.
