Twilight Zone Little Bluestem

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Little bluestem is a native grass that thrives in poor to average, well-drained soils — avoid planting in rich, amended beds, which can cause floppy growth. No soil preparation is needed beyond digging the planting hole. Water regularly through the first season, then reduce as the plant becomes drought tolerant.

Cut plants back hard to 4–6 inches above the ground in late winter or very early spring, before new growth emerges. This is important — if you skip this step, new growth will struggle through the old stems. Little bluestem provides striking blue-gray summer foliage that transitions to coppery-red in fall and winter, providing months of ornamental interest. No fertilizing is needed.
