Pink-apricot flowers packed with 100 to 150 petals, scented of bergamot, honeysuckle, and lemon verbena. Martha Stewart™ hybrid tea rose (Rosa 'Meiffable') grows 2.5 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide in full sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 11.

A petal count that high is exceptional, and on a plant this compact the flowers look outsized.

Citrus and honeysuckle are unusual notes in a rose, sharper and cleaner than the sweet or fruity scents most carry.

At under three feet this is compact for a hybrid tea, which makes it usable in a container or the front of a border where the class usually runs too tall. Zone 11 puts it further south than most roses will go.

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a wide, generous planting hole and amend with compost. Set the bud union (the swollen knob where canes meet the rootstock) at or just below soil level. Space 24–30 inches apart and water deeply after planting. Mulch 3 inches deep around the base, keeping mulch away from the canes.

Care Tips

Plant in full sun, at least 6 hours a day. Morning sun dries the leaves and helps prevent disease.
Plant in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of compost worked in.
Water deeply, about an inch a week, at the base of the plant and in the morning.
Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep, keeping it back from the canes.
Feed every 4 to 6 weeks from spring to midsummer, then stop so new growth can harden before winter.
Deadhead by cutting back to the first leaf with five leaflets to bring on new flowers. Stop deadheading in early fall.
Prune in early spring as the buds swell. Remove dead and weak canes, then cut healthy canes back to 12 to 24 inches above an outward-facing bud.
These roses grow on their own roots, so a plant killed back in a hard winter regrows true to type.
Black spot and powdery mildew show up in humid weather. Space plants for air, water at the base, and remove infected leaves and fallen debris.
Japanese beetles can strip flowers and leaves in midsummer. Hand-pick them into soapy water early in the day.
Rose rosette disease causes red, bristly, distorted new shoots. Remove and destroy an affected plant, roots and all; it does not recover.
