Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep. Choose a location sheltered from harsh winter wind and morning sun for the best results.

Water consistently throughout the season. Remove old or winter-damaged leaves in late winter before new growth and flower buds emerge- this improves visibility of the flowers and reduces disease. Divide every 4–5 years in early spring only if clumps become very crowded. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer. Largely pest-free and slug-resistant compared to many shade perennials. The nodding flowers in warm sunset tones are produced very early in the season, often before the last frost.
