Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil in partial shade. Hellebores are among the most valuable perennials for late winter and early spring bloom — the flowers open from midwinter into spring even through snow and cold. Incorporate compost or leaf mold into the planting area. Space plants 18–24 inches apart. Water well and mulch generously to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Cut back old foliage to the ground in late fall or very early winter to showcase the emerging flowers and reduce the spread of leaf diseases. Hellebores are long-lived and resent disturbance — choose the planting site carefully. They self-seed freely to naturalize over time. Fertilize lightly in spring. Keep soil consistently moist. All parts are toxic if ingested. One of the most rewarding perennials for late-winter interest in the shaded garden.
