Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 12–18 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Good drainage is essential- gayfeather will rot in wet, poorly drained soil.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant. The white flower spikes open from the top downward, like all liatris. Deadhead after flowering to keep the planting tidy. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. No fertilization needed in lean soil. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. White gayfeather is a refined alternative to the more common purple-flowering forms, equally attractive to pollinators and excellent as a cut flower.
