Russian Sage

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Lean, dry conditions and excellent drainage are essential- rich or wet soil causes floppy, short-lived plants.

Water after planting then reduce significantly once established- Russian sage is highly drought tolerant and thrives in dry, hot conditions. Cut back hard to 6–8 inches from the ground in early spring before new growth begins- this hard pruning is essential for maintaining a compact, upright plant. Without cutting back, plants become woody and open. Fertilize very lightly or not at all. Deer resistant and virtually pest-free. The long-lasting, hazy silver-blue flower spikes are extraordinary for months in summer and fall.
