Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained to dry, lean soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Prairie Blues is a blue-foliaged little bluestem selection with exceptional steel-blue summer color that transitions to rich copper and burgundy in fall. It adapts to poor, dry, and sandy soils — avoid rich or wet conditions. No soil amendment is needed. Water regularly through the first season to establish.

Care Tips

Cut plants back to 4–6 inches in late winter before new growth begins. Little bluestem is a native prairie grass that is highly drought tolerant and very long lived with minimal care once established. The blue summer color, copper fall color, and persistent seed heads through winter provide three seasons of interest. No fertilizing is needed in lean soils. Outstanding for dry, difficult sites where other grasses would struggle.
