Primrose Lilac

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained, near-neutral to slightly alkaline soil, spacing 8–10 feet apart. Primrose is a classic common lilac with pale, primrose-yellow flowers — the most yellow of the traditional lilacs. It adapts to average garden conditions and is very cold-hardy. Water well at planting and mulch lightly. Choose a sunny site with good air circulation.

Prune right after flowering. Remove spent flower clusters promptly to direct energy toward next year's buds. Rejuvenate old, leggy plants by removing one-third of the oldest canes each year over three years. Fertilize in spring. The soft yellow flower color is unique among common lilacs and has made Primrose a sought-after variety. The flowers are fragrant though not as powerfully scented as some common lilac varieties. Long-lived and reliable.
