Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in acidic, well-drained soil, spacing 4–6 feet apart. Duke is an early-season highbush blueberry variety known for its large, firm, mildly sweet berries, exceptional cold hardiness, and consistent productivity. Acidic soil with pH 4.5–5.5 is essential — test and amend if needed. Mulch generously with wood chips to maintain acidity. Plant two or more varieties for best pollination.

Care Tips

Prune in late winter by removing the oldest, most unproductive canes and weak growth. Fertilize with an acid fertilizer in spring. Water consistently during fruit development. Duke's early season and excellent cold hardiness make it one of the most reliable highbush blueberries for northern gardens. The large, firm berries are excellent for fresh eating and freezing. Fall foliage turns attractive orange-red, adding a second season of interest.
