Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average, well-drained soil- does not need rich or heavily amended beds. Tolerates clay and lean soils. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Choose a permanent location, as this plant strongly resents being moved.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first 1–2 seasons while the deep root system establishes; thereafter very drought tolerant with minimal supplemental watering needed. Do not divide or transplant once established- the deep taproot is very sensitive to disturbance. Plants look modest the first year or two but mature into long-lived, carefree specimens that get better every season. Leave the decorative seed pods for fall and winter interest. Deer resistant and virtually maintenance-free.
