Plant in average to moist, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Water regularly after planting; once established it is moderately drought tolerant. Cut back to within a few inches of the ground in early spring before new growth emerges- do not cut back in fall, as the upright form and feathery plumes provide outstanding winter interest and structure in the garden. Divide every 3–4 years in spring when the center begins to die out. Very few pest or disease issues. One of the most reliable and versatile ornamental grasses available, with a strongly upright habit that works well in a wide range of landscape styles.
