Pow Wow White opens pure white with a golden cone at the center, and the petals overlap into a full flower rather than leaving gaps between them. Echinacea purpurea Pow Wow White grows 20 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8, and blooms the first season after planting.
Flowering runs from early summer into fall on stiff well-branched stems that hold the flowers upright without staking. It reblooms without deadheading, though cutting spent flowers keeps it looking cleaner.
The cone shifts from pale green at the base to gold at the tips, which shows up against the white petals. Leave the last seedheads standing at the end of the season for goldfinches, and the cones hold their shape under snow.
The compact size fits a container, a front-of-border planting, or a mass planting. Purple coneflower takes drought, heat, humidity, poor soil, and clay once established. Full sun gives the sturdiest stems and the heaviest bloom. Deer generally leave it alone.
