Large, deeply lobed, finger-like leaves open coppery red in spring on this foamy bells, turn olive green in warm weather, and return to rich red in fall, with burgundy-red centers throughout. Heucherella Fun and Games® 'Red Rover' grows 6 to 8 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 9.
Creamy white flowers rise on burgundy-rose stems in late spring, and its Heuchera villosa parentage helps it through hot, humid summers.
Foamy bells, Heucherella, are a cross between coral bells (Heuchera) and foamflower (Tiarella), both native to North America. From the foamflower side they get deeply lobed leaves, often with dark veining at the center, and airy spikes of small flowers; from coral bells they get a wider range of leaf color. The leaves are evergreen in mild winters and shift color with the seasons.
Foamy bells do best in part shade in soil that stays evenly moist but drains well, and they struggle in heavy ground that stays wet through winter. Plants bred with Heuchera villosa take more heat and humidity than older foamy bells. The heights given are for the leaf mound; flower stems stand taller.
The low, spreading mound covers ground at the front of a shaded bed or under trees.
