Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, acidic soil, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Red Sprite is a compact, dwarf female winterberry with extremely heavy crops of bright red berries on a tidy, rounded plant. For berry production, plant with a compatible male pollinator such as Jim Dandy. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost if needed. Water well at planting and mulch generously.

Care Tips

Prune in early spring to remove dead wood and maintain shape. Winterberry is a native shrub that thrives in wet, acidic soils. The brilliant red berries in fall and winter are among the most ornamental of any native shrub and provide critical food for overwintering birds. No regular fertilizing is needed in naturally fertile, moist soils. Red Sprite's compact size makes it ideal for smaller gardens and foundation plantings.
