Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in well-drained to dry soil in full sun, spacing 24–30 inches apart. Provence lavender is a classic, long-stemmed French lavender type ideal for drying and culinary use. It requires excellent drainage — wet soils cause rot. If your soil is heavy or clay, amend with coarse sand or gravel and raise the planting area slightly. Water moderately after planting and reduce as the plant establishes.

Care Tips

Shear plants back by about one-third after the main bloom in summer to encourage compact growth and possible rebloom. Do not cut into old, leafless wood — lavender does not regenerate well from old wood. Divide or replace every five to seven years as plants become woody. No fertilizing needed in lean soils. Provence produces the long, straight stems most prized for dried flower bunches and sachets. One of the most useful and fragrant lavenders.
