Plant with the eyes no more than 1–2 inches below the soil surface in fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost. Choose a permanent location and avoid moving once established. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Water regularly during spring growth and bloom. Stake plants before stems become top-heavy- the large double flowers are very heavy when wet. Remove all foliage in late fall to reduce botrytis blight. Allow foliage to die back naturally before removing. Fertilize lightly in spring and after flowering. A classic, deeply fragrant, rich crimson-red double peony that has been a garden staple for over a century. Peonies improve and become more spectacular with each passing year.
