Pairs well with

Starry white flowers cover this low stonecrop in late spring, one of the first sedums of the year to bloom. Whorled stonecrop, also called woodland stonecrop, Sedum ternatum 'Larinem Park' grows 4 to 6 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide in full sun to part shade, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8, and spreads steadily once settled.

The small, rounded leaves grow in whorls of three, the source of the species name ternatum, and in milder climates they stay green through winter. The species is native to the eastern United States, from New Jersey to Iowa and south to Georgia and Arkansas, where it grows on rock ledges, on mossy boulders and in open woods. It takes shade far better than most stonecrop and handles rocky, shallow, dry soil.

Creeping stonecrop grows as a low mat of small, fleshy leaves, and its stems root wherever they touch soil. That habit lets a single plant fill the gaps between stepping stones, creep along the top of a wall or cover a dry slope where grass struggles. A broken piece dropped on bare ground will usually root and start a new plant. In mild winters the leaves stay on and the mat keeps its color; in colder zones the plant drops many of its leaves and fills back in from the stems in spring.

It fits a shady rock garden, the ground beneath shrubs or the edge of a woodland path.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Excellent drainage is essential- stonecrop will not tolerate wet or poorly drained conditions.

Care Tips

Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Woodland types such as whorled stonecrop also grow in part shade.
Water through the first summer; established plants handle drought.
Feed lightly, if at all. Rich soil makes loose, floppy growth.
Trim off spent flower stems after bloom to keep the plant tidy.
Mounding types die back to a tight crown in winter; cut old stems to the ground in early spring.
Mat-forming types may lose leaves in cold winters; trim off dead growth in spring once new growth starts.
Cut back stems that spread past their space. The cuttings root easily in moist soil.
Pull weeds while they are small, since they are hard to remove once rooted through the plant.
Avoid low spots where water stands in winter; wet ground in the cold months is the main cause of loss.
Divide or move pieces in spring.
