Striped Cream Violet

Plant in spring in moist, well-drained soil in a partially shaded spot. Violets prefer humus-rich soil — incorporate compost into the planting area before planting. Space plants 6–12 inches apart and water well. A light mulch of shredded leaves or bark helps retain moisture and mimics the woodland conditions violets prefer.

Keep soil consistently moist. Violets self-seed readily, which can be charming — allow seedlings to fill in, or thin as needed. The striped flowers are attractive and bloom in spring. Very little maintenance is required beyond keeping the area weeded and moist. Top-dress with compost each spring. An easy, charming plant for shaded garden spots and under deciduous trees.
