Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in acidic, well-drained soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Lowbush blueberry is a native groundcover that provides multiple seasons of interest: white spring flowers, edible blue berries in summer, and brilliant scarlet-red fall foliage. Acidic soil with pH 4.5–5.5 is essential — test and amend if needed. Mulch with pine bark or wood chips to maintain acidity.

Care Tips

Prune by cutting back stems to about 6 inches in early spring every few years to rejuvenate and improve berry production. Fertilize with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist during fruiting. Plant in groups for best cross-pollination. The brilliant fall foliage is extraordinary. Birds love the berries — plant enough to share. An outstanding native plant for edible groundcover use in acidic soil conditions.
