Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, moist to dry, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native aster is highly adaptable to shade, clay, and dry conditions.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant, especially in shade. Pinch stem tips back in late spring to encourage a compact, well-branched plant. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Watch for aster yellows- distorted growth indicates infection; remove and discard affected plants. The delicate, lavender-blue flowers in fall are lovely and provide valuable late-season nectar for pollinators. An excellent native aster for shaded and partly shaded settings.
