Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, moist to dry, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native aster is highly adaptable and tolerates a wide range of conditions including dry shade.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant, especially in shade. Pinch stem tips back once or twice in late spring to early summer to encourage a more compact, branching plant with more flower heads in fall. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Watch for aster yellows- distorted or discolored growth indicates infection; remove and discard affected plants. Largely otherwise pest-free. Excellent for pollinators.
