Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in average, well-drained soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Tanager produces vibrant, warm orange-red flowers with a dark central cone — a bold, tropical-looking color combination. It adapts to average garden conditions without special preparation. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then reduce as the plant becomes established and heat-tolerant.

Care Tips

Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering, or leave seed heads for birds. Divide every three to four years in spring. No heavy fertilizing is needed. The warm orange-red color is outstanding in the late summer garden and pairs beautifully with deep purples, bronzes, and golds. An important nectar source for bees and butterflies. Eye-catching and reliable in mixed borders and cutting gardens.
