Pairs well with

Sunmagic Vintage Ruby opens a deep ruby red that softens as the flowers age, giving the plant several tones at once through the season. Echinacea Sunmagic Vintage Ruby grows 18 to 24 inches tall and wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 9.

Flowering runs from early summer into fall, produced heavily on stiff upright stems that need no staking. It reblooms through the season, and deadheading extends the run.

The habit is compact and even, which suits a container or a front-of-border planting where a taller coneflower would crowd its neighbors.

Leave the last seedheads standing at the end of the season for goldfinches. Coneflowers take drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil once established, and they want well-drained ground. Winter wet is the usual cause of failure, so avoid low spots that stay saturated. Deer generally leave them alone.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in average, well-drained soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Vintage Ruby produces rich, ruby-red flowers that fade through warm tones as they age, creating an attractive vintage-toned color effect. It adapts to average garden conditions without special preparation. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then reduce as the plant becomes established.

Care Tips

Deadhead to encourage continuous bloom or allow seed heads for birds. Divide every three to four years in spring. No heavy fertilizing is needed. The deep ruby red tones pair beautifully with gold, bronze, and purple companions in the late summer border. Excellent for cutting — the flowers have good vase life. An outstanding nectar source for bees and butterflies throughout the blooming season.
