Pairs well with

Joe Pye weed is a native perennial most people love and cannot fit, since the species runs five feet or more. 'Baby Joe' is a compact selection of Eutrochium dubium, holding at 30 to 48 inches with a 15 to 18 inch spread, which puts it in a normal border. Full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8, and it reaches full size in its second season.

Large mauve-purple flower heads open in late summer and hold into fall, at a point when most perennials are finished. Butterflies and bees come to them heavily through the bloom, and the seedheads that follow feed songbirds through winter if you leave them standing.

The stems are stiff enough to carry the flower heads upright without staking, which is the failing of the tall species in a windy or rich site.

Joe Pye weed grows naturally in wet meadows and along stream edges, so it takes wet ground and wants consistent moisture. It struggles in a dry bed. It tolerates moderate salt and clay, and deer leave it alone.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, average soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Baby Joe is a compact, dwarf Joe Pye weed — significantly smaller than the standard species — bringing the same butterfly-attracting, rose-purple flowers to smaller garden spaces. It adapts to average to moist conditions without special preparation. Water regularly for the first few weeks after planting.

Care Tips

Cut back by about one-half in late spring to encourage a bushier, more compact plant. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every three to four years in spring to maintain vigor. No heavy fertilizing needed. Baby Joe's compact habit makes the giant Joe Pye weed's outstanding pollinator value accessible to gardeners with limited space. Outstanding late-season nectar source for monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
