Starship Blue Cardinal Flower

Plant in moist to wet, humus-rich soil. Space 12–18 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep. Excellent for rain gardens and consistently moist borders.

Water generously and consistently- cardinal flower thrives with reliable moisture and declines quickly in dry soil. Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage side shoots. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 2–3 years in spring. Allow some self-seeding. Highly attractive to hummingbirds. The vivid blue flowers are a striking and rare color among native perennials. Starship Blue is a compact selection that stays upright and tidy in the border without staking. Largely pest-free.
