Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Lean conditions and good drainage produce the best, longest-lived plants.

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant. Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage a second flush of bloom. Cut back to the basal foliage rosette in late fall. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Largely pest-free and deer resistant.
