Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Care Tips

Water consistently throughout the growing season- Christmas fern prefers reliably moist, shaded conditions but adapts well to moderate drought once established. Remove old fronds in early spring before new fiddleheads emerge- this is the only maintenance typically needed. No fertilization generally required. The deep, glossy, dark green fronds remain evergreen through winter- an outstanding quality that provides year-round structure and color in the shade garden. The evergreen fronds were historically used for Christmas decorations, giving this native fern its common name. Largely pest-free.
