Pairs well with

Stokes' aster is not a true aster, and it does not behave like one. Stokesia 'Honeysong Purple' flowers in midsummer rather than fall, and the blooms are large and fringed, closer to a cornflower than a daisy. It grows 12 to 15 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide in full sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.

The color is an intense royal purple with a hint of red toward the center, and the flowers stand well above the foliage on sturdy stems. Bloom runs for weeks in mid to late summer, and deadheading keeps it going. They cut well and last in a vase.

The foliage is strap-shaped and evergreen through winter in the milder end of the range, forming a low basal rosette that stays presentable after the flowers finish.

Stokes' aster is a southeastern native and handles heat and humidity better than most perennials, which is where it earns its place. It needs well-drained soil, and winter wet is the main thing that kills it, so avoid heavy clay and low spots that stay saturated. Butterflies come to the flowers through the bloom.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained to dry soil, spacing 12–18 inches apart. Honeysong Purple is a Stoke's aster with large, rich purple, fringed flower heads that are outstanding for cutting and garden display. It adapts to average to lean conditions without special preparation. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then reduce as the plant establishes. Good drainage is important.

Care Tips

Water regularly during the first season; once established it tolerates drought well. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage flowering through summer and fall. Cut foliage to the ground in late fall or early spring. Rarely troubled by pests or disease.
