Pairs well with

A tall woodland native for shade, black cohosh sends up slender white wands of bottlebrush flowers through the summer that catch the light against the dark understory. The deeply cut, ferny foliage looks attractive from spring until frost.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, working in plenty of compost or leaf mold. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch to keep the roots cool. Black cohosh is slow to establish but very long-lived once settled, so choose a spot where it can stay put.

Care Tips

Water consistently through the first two seasons- established plants tolerate short dry spells but look best in reliably moist soil. Avoid hot afternoon sun, which stunts growth and scorches the foliage. In an exposed site the tall flowering stalks may need staking. Cut spent stems back after bloom, or leave them standing for the seedheads, and cut the plant to the ground in late fall or early spring. Division is rarely needed and clumps resent disturbance- plants often take a season to recover. Largely pest- and disease-free. The white flower wands read well in low light, which makes this one of the most effective natives for brightening a shaded border.
