Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 5–6 feet apart. Ninebark is one of the toughest and most adaptable native shrubs available, tolerating poor soil, drought, and a wide range of conditions. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball, backfill with existing soil, and water well. Mulch lightly to retain moisture. It establishes quickly without special care.

Care Tips

Prune in early spring, cutting stems back by one-third to one-half to promote the vigorous new growth that produces the best foliage color. Avoid pruning in summer or fall, which reduces the following year's bloom. The foliage transitions through stunning shades of gold, orange, and red throughout the season. Very drought tolerant once established. No regular fertilizing is needed.
