Regent Serviceberry

Spotswood Greenery

Regent is a serviceberry that stays a shrub. Most serviceberries grow into 20-foot trees, but Amelanchier alnifolia 'Regent' holds at 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, which puts it within reach of a mixed border or a small edible garden. It is hardy from Zone 2 through Zone 9, about as wide a range as any woody plant carries, and it starts fruiting within two or three seasons.

White flowers open in early spring before the leaves, among the first woody plants to bloom and a meaningful nectar source for bees emerging before much else is available. The fruit follows in early summer, purple-black and sweet, closer to a blueberry than anything else, and worth picking for pies and preserves if you get to it before the birds do. Fall foliage runs yellow through orange to red.

Serviceberry foliage feeds viceroy, tiger swallowtail, and striped hairstreak caterpillars.

This is the western serviceberry, native to the northern plains and mountain west rather than the East, which makes it more cold and drought tolerant than the eastern species and less comfortable in humid southern summers. It suckers modestly into a clump. Deer will browse it, so protect young plants where pressure is heavy.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Wonderful

Wonderful

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

The information and accuracy of the description of the ordered plants was great. The ability to search for specific plants was nice. Could search for terms not pre-defined and still came up with relevant specimens.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, spacing 6–8 feet apart. Regent is a compact, multi-stemmed serviceberry with white flowers in early spring, edible blue-purple berries in early summer, and spectacular orange-red fall foliage. It adapts to a range of soils. Dig a generous planting hole, amend with compost, and water well. Mulch to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead wood. Keep soil consistently moist. The spring flowers attract early pollinators. The sweet, blueberry-flavored berries are excellent for fresh eating and preserves — but birds will compete enthusiastically for them. The outstanding orange-red fall foliage provides a third season of beauty. Fertilize in spring. A superb, four-season native shrub with wildlife value, ornamental appeal, and edible fruit.
