Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil in a shaded or partially shaded location. This native alumroot is an excellent groundcover for shaded borders and woodland gardens. Amend the planting area with compost. Space plants 12–18 inches apart and water well after planting. Mulch lightly to retain moisture and keep the root zone cool.

Care Tips

Remove weathered or tattered foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. Divide clumps every three to four years in early spring — alumroot gradually heaves out of the soil, and replanting the crowns at the correct depth keeps plants healthy and vigorous. The delicate, airy flower spikes attract hummingbirds. Fertilize lightly in spring. A reliable native perennial for challenging shaded conditions.
