Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average, well-drained soil. Tolerates clay and poor soils. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant. This native perennial requires almost no maintenance once established. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 4–5 years in spring if desired, though established clumps can be left undisturbed indefinitely. No fertilization needed. The fine, needle-like foliage turns a brilliant golden-yellow in fall. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. An excellent, underused native perennial for low-maintenance sunny borders.
