Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native prairie grass thrives in lean conditions- avoid rich or wet soils.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Cut back to 4–6 inches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Do not cut back in fall- the tall stems, turkey-foot seed heads, and warm fall color provide exceptional wildlife habitat and winter structure. Divide every 4–5 years in spring. No fertilization needed. The stately, upright habit and vivid bronze-purple fall color make this one of the finest native grasses for four-season interest.
