Blackhawks Big Bluestem

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained to average soil, spacing 24–30 inches apart. Blackhawks is a big bluestem native grass variety selected for its exceptionally dark, burgundy-purple foliage color that develops early in the season and deepens through summer and fall — one of the most dramatically colored native grasses available. It adapts to a range of soils.

Cut plants back to 6–8 inches in late winter before new growth begins. The deep, dark foliage color is the defining feature — combined with the tall, architectural habit and attractive seed heads, Blackhawks provides outstanding multi-season interest. No fertilizing needed in average soils. A dramatic, visually striking native grass for large mixed borders and naturalistic plantings where a bold, dark-colored statement plant is desired.
