Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Native prairie conditions- lean, dry- produce the best growth.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Cut back to 4–6 inches in late winter or early spring. Do not cut back in fall- the stems, seed heads, and smoky blue-gray fall coloration provide outstanding winter interest. Divide every 4–5 years in spring. No fertilization needed. Holy Smoke is notable for its exceptional blue-gray foliage color in summer, which sets it apart from other big bluestem selections. Largely pest-free.
