Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained to average soil, spacing 24–30 inches apart. Red October is a big bluestem native grass variety selected for its exceptionally vivid red fall color — one of the most intensely colored of all ornamental grasses in autumn. It adapts to a range of soils including clay and moist conditions. No special soil preparation needed. Water regularly through the first season.

Care Tips

Cut plants back to 6–8 inches in late winter before new growth begins. The outstanding red fall color is the defining feature of this variety — combined with the tall, architectural habit and attractive seed heads, Red October provides exceptional multi-season interest. No fertilizing needed in average soils. A magnificent, native grass for large mixed borders and naturalistic plantings where a bold, tall grass with spectacular fall color is desired.
