One of the last plants to bloom, covering itself in sky-blue flowers just as other perennials fade. The stiff, aromatic foliage is deer resistant and tolerates dry, rocky soils with ease.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 18–24 inches apart in average, well-drained soil. This native aster is fragrant when brushed or crushed and adapts easily to a range of garden conditions. Water regularly through the first growing season. A light mulch helps retain moisture. Good air circulation helps minimize powdery mildew in humid climates.

Care Tips

Pinch back stem tips by about one-third in early to mid-June to produce a fuller, more compact plant with a much better fall flower display. Without pinching, plants tend to get tall and floppy. Divide every two to three years in early spring. Aromatic aster is an important late-season nectar source for migrating butterflies and bees. The fragrant foliage is a bonus that adds sensory interest to the garden. No heavy fertilizing is needed.
