Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 4–5 feet apart. Viking is a black chokeberry variety selected for its compact habit and exceptional berry production. Like all chokeberries, it adapts to wet soils, clay, and a wide range of difficult conditions. No soil amendment is needed. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball, backfill with existing soil, and water well. Mulch lightly.

Care Tips

Prune in late winter to remove the oldest stems and maintain vigor. Viking stays more compact than the species. The dark berries are edible and excellent for jams and juices. Birds love the berries in fall. Brilliant red-orange fall foliage adds a second season of interest. No regular fertilizing is needed. An excellent, easy-care native shrub for small gardens, borders, and wildlife-friendly plantings.
