Carmine red is a hard color to find in a fall aster, and Kickin' Carmine Red delivers it as a saturated magenta-red rather than the pinks and purples the season usually offers. Symphyotrichum novae-angliae Kickin' Carmine Red grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 9, and blooms the first season after planting.
The daisies open in late summer with yellow centers and keep coming into fall, covering the foliage completely at peak. Bees come to them steadily through the bloom, when little else is producing nectar.
The habit is naturally bushy and rounded, holding together without staking or a June cutback.
New England asters want moist soil and take wet ground better than most perennials. Full sun gives the heaviest bloom and keeps the lower foliage cleaner through late summer. Give it room for air movement rather than crowding it against neighbors.
