Pink Crush carries large rose-pink daisies on a plant that mounds rather than stretches. Symphyotrichum novae-angliae 'Pink Crush' grows 20 to 24 inches tall and spreads 34 to 38 inches, noticeably wider than tall, in full sun to part sun. Hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8, blooming the first season after planting.
The flowers are single rather than semi-double, larger than most New England aster blooms, and they open thickly enough to cover the foliage. Bloom starts in late summer and runs into fall, overlapping the monarch migration, with bees coming to it steadily through the flowering. The foliage feeds pearl crescent and silvery checkerspot caterpillars.
The low spreading habit holds together without staking or a June cutback, which makes it usable at the front of a border or in a mass planting where the tall New England asters would need managing.
New England asters want moist soil and take wet ground better than most perennials. Full sun gives the heaviest bloom and helps keep the foliage clean through late summer. Deer generally leave it alone.
