Vibrant Dome solves the problem that makes people give up on New England asters. Instead of growing tall and leaning over by October, this selection of the native Symphyotrichum novae-angliae forms a wide low mound 18 to 24 inches tall and 24 to 36 inches across, and holds that shape without any pruning. Full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8, blooming the first season after planting.

Electric pink-purple daisies cover the mound so completely in fall that the foliage disappears underneath. Bloom starts in late summer and runs into mid fall, overlapping the monarch migration, and bees come to it steadily through the flowering. The foliage feeds pearl crescent and silvery checkerspot caterpillars.

Mildew resistance is better than most New England asters, so the lower leaves stay on the plant instead of browning off by September.

New England asters want moist soil and take wet ground better than most perennials. Full sun gives the heaviest bloom. Because the habit stays low and wide on its own, this one works at the front of a border or in a row along a walk where the taller selections would need staking or a June cutback. Deer generally leave it alone.

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting Tips

Plant in average, well-drained soil. Space 15–18 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips

Plant in full sun.
Plant in average soil that drains well. New England asters also handle moist ground.
Water through the first summer. Established plants handle dry spells, but drought stress makes mildew worse.
Feed lightly, if at all. Rich soil makes tall, floppy stems.
For shorter, bushier plants, cut tall types back by a third to a half in late spring or early summer. Stop by early July so flower buds can form.
Powdery mildew often shows up on the lower leaves in late summer, especially on New England asters. It is mostly cosmetic. Space plants for air and water at the base.
On tall types the lower leaves often brown and drop by bloom time.
Leave stems standing over winter, and cut them to the ground in early spring.
Divide every 2 to 3 years in spring, when the center of the plant thins out.
Some asters spread by roots or self-sow. Pull unwanted seedlings in spring; seedlings of named varieties do not match the parent.
